FRESH LOOK: Painted Colander {pops of yellow}

A Splash of Yellow via homeworkFall is around the corner but for now I’m hanging on to summer. I’ve been into yellow lately – it’s so bright and cheery and I’ve added little pops of yellow here and there in my kitchen.

The yellow splashes started last spring when I painted my hutch. After the paint was dry, I used yellow accents to mix in with my white dishes and knick knacks. I’ve since changed to blue, aqua and sea shells but lately I’ve been drawn back to the cheerful burst of yellow sunshine.
Lemons always add fresh pop of color and I often have a bowl of lemons on my counter.
Bathroom ShelvesI recently saw this photo from Design Dreams by Anne. She was showing off her new beautiful bathroom when I spied that blue colander on the top shelf. I loved it and the little towels and goodies stored in it. I had to have one and I happened to have a few extra colanders. One was outside on my potting table but it was red. Time to break out the spray paint.
A Splash of Yellow via homework06I didn’t have yellow spray paint on hand but I did have a A Martha Stewart Spray Paint Kit. These kits are so handy for small spray paint jobs. You mix Martha Stewart craft paint with the solution provided and add the spray paint nozzle. Easy!
A Splash of Yellow via homework05I wanted a lemon yellow color so I used Martha Stewart Glass Paint Gloss in Yellow Jacket.
A Splash of Yellow via homework04I taped off the handles and the metal areas and then started spraying. It took several light coats to cover the red and achieve a nice smooth finish.
A Splash of Yellow via homework13Once the yellow paint was dry, I gave it a final coat with a clear gloss spray paint.

A Splash of Yellow via homework08A pretty lemon yellow color to sit on my counter and hold dish towels.

A Splash of Yellow via homework11Yes, I’m hanging on to summer with pops of yellow. How about you? Are you ready for fall?

Thanks for visiting.

  8. It looks beautiful! I love the bright yellow. Now I remember I have one colander with broken handle, I should paint it and use it as the storage bowl!

  9. So pretty! I paid to get a red colander years ago, but never thought to paint my own. I’ll definitely have to use this tip sometime when I’m looking for a pop of seasonal color, but don’t want to get spendy.

  18. I love this idea! I'm currently in the process of moving all my upper cabinets to open shelving, and am thinking this would make a great addition to my shelves. I am however wondering how the paint will stand up against use...

    1. Hi Ricki, I think it would depend on what type of use. Mine is purely decorative and will hold towels so it won't get any use and should last. Thanks!
