ETCETERAS: Felt & White Birch Mushrooms

Felt & White Birch Mushrooms via homework (1)There’s something about mushrooms that are irresistible to me. Besides of course eating them, I love the look of mushrooms in fairy gardens and woodland décor.

As the weather starts to cool, I thought it would be a perfect time to add a bit of woodland scenery to my hutch where I decorate seasonally.
Felt & White Birch Mushrooms via homework (4)I’ve been saving these white birch branches for a few years. My birch tree died and I saved several branches to use for projects. Using some of the thinner branches, I sawed them into varying lengths.
Felt & White Birch Mushrooms via homework (6)The mushroom caps are made from styrofoam eggs. Cut them in half and use them for a form. Cut a circular piece of felt (I used quilt batting that had little flecks in it) and glue it to the styrofoam egg half. The piece of felt should be large enough to hang over the bottom edge of the mushroom cap. Cut another piece of felt to cover the bottom of the cap. Glue the mushroom cap to the birch branch and you have a fun mushroom.
Felt & White Birch Mushrooms via homework (3)Insert the mushrooms into a dish or holder (you can cut a piece of floral foam to hold everything in place). I used a terracotta plant saucer that I aged with a solution of baking soda and water. Just mix a little baking soda and water and brush it on to your terracotta. Note: this is only a temporary look and can be washed off. Add some moss to finish off the woodland look.
Felt & White Birch Mushrooms via homework (2)I had so much fun making these little mushrooms. This was a simple project that could easily be adapted into a kid craft or fairy garden project.
Thanks for visiting.
