UPCYCLING: How to make a faux wood tin from a candy tin

Candy Tin with Wood PaperFather’s Day is just around the corner and if you have a Dad or guy in your life who has just about everything, it’s always fun to make something. These upcycled candy tins will be great for holding little objects like candy or paper clips and they were super easy to make.

Start with some old tins that have nice covers. Ironically, I gave these candies to my mom (she loves them) and told her to save me the tins.
  1. Clean you tins and choose some nice paper to cover the tins with. I happened to have this amazing wood grain paper and even better, it had an adhesive back. You could also use some cool contact paper.
  2. Cut a strip of paper to cover the outside of the tin. You’ll notice I didn’t cover the tin all the way to the top so that the lid would fit back on.
  3. Trace around the lid and carefully cut the paper into a circle to fit the top. I cut the circle slightly smaller than the traced circle.
  4. To add a little accent, use some decorate tape to trim the edge of the lid.
  5. You can leave the tins like this or add knobs. Knobs add a decorative touch but if you want to stack the tins, leave the knobs off. The knobs I used are actually the little balls that come with ceiling fan chains. I added a little screw to cover the hole. Glue the knobs to the top of the tin using a strong craft glue like E6000.

Father's Day Wood TinsThat’s it. You’re done. You can fill the tins with little trinkets and they’re ready to gift.

Candy Tin to Wood Gift Tin I sort of want to keep these. I really like how they turned out – but I’m going to give them to my Dad.

How to make a faux wood gift tinI’ve already filled one with some nice sugar free candy for him.

  1. These are really cute! I bet you could do it with the larger tins that cookies usually go in as well. It would look really nice on a bookshelf. The wood grain paper is a very nice touch.
