Etceteras: branch spools

I still have some branches left in our yard trimming pile.

I’ve made several projects with them including this photo holder and wood tacks.

I love the texture of these branches and wanted to use them for a new project. I came up with these branch spools for my twine.

I sawed sections of the branch into ¼ inch slices. I used a hand saw because I haven’t mastered power tools and maybe never will.

I glued a dowel to the inside of the branch slices to create a spool.

 Pretty decorative spools that combine two of my favorite things - natural wood and twine.

Upcycling: branch photo holder

You may have seen my previous posts on how I’ve made use of our yard clippings. I made a yule log  and tree for the holidays and thumbtacks. I finally came up with an idea for one of the thicker branches.

I made a photo holder with a carving in the branch. I wanted the branch to resemble those old trees that have initials and a heart carved into them.

I carved the heart with an Xacto knife. Working slowing, I carved the outline and then chipped away the bark and cleaned up the edges. Miraculously, I didn’t cut myself while doing this.

Once the heart was complete, I sawed a groove into the top of the branch and glued a paper clip into the groove.

I had a feeling when I started this project that it would end up on my wall of shame but I
{heart}
the way it turned out.
