The Dirt: grape hyacinths

Nothing brightens up a dreary winter than pretty flowers. If it’s too cold for outdoor gardening where you live, bring the color inside.

Spring bulbs grow nicely indoors and one of my favorites is the Grape Hyacinth. I bought these bulbs in a pot but you can purchase just the bulbs and force them. Here’s a how-to link on forcing bulbs indoors. It takes a little pre-planning but the results are worth it.

I used an old pitcher, canister and a regular flower pot for these plants. The pitcher was a little rusty so I used a plastic bag as a liner.

Here’s where they’re living - a bright sunny spot in my dining room.

These hyacinths are still closed up but they’re slowing waking up from their winter nap.
