Etceteras: little frosted trees

These little frosted trees are easy to make and can be used in a variety of ways – cupcake toppers, ornaments or for just a fun little splash of holiday décor.

To make these trees, roll green cardstock into a cone shape and trim the bottom. Insert a shish kabob stick into the cone and secure with hot glue. Note: I cut my sticks into 5 inch lengths.

Cover the tree in Mod Podge or craft glue and roll in Epsom salt. You can use course or Kosher salt or glitter depending on the look you want.

I put my trees into a box filled with floral foam and covered the top with white gift basket shreds.

A grosgrain ribbon finishes off the box.

Pretty little frosty trees and a note to self { polish the silver }.

Celebrations: potpourri christmas trees

The holiday season is upon us and I’m happy to kick off my holiday project list with these potpourri Christmas trees.

I recently participated in the STYROFOAM^TM Brand Foam series at Under the Table and Dreaming and this was the project I submitted. 25 bloggers received STYROFOAM^TM  products and got busy creating holiday projects. For my STYROFOAM^TM project, I was inspired by Christmas trees I had seen in some of the trendy catalogs. Those trees were made from an assortment of natural materials including be driftwood, pinecones and other woody materials.

I searched the craft supply stores and lucked out by finding several bags of potpourri at the dollar store that included these white pods.

To make these trees, here is what you will need:

Materials:

• (2) 6” x 3” cones of STYROFOAM^TM Brand Foam
• (1) 9” x 4” cone of STYROFOAM^TM Brand Foam
• Craft glue or glue gun
• Potpourri
• Corrugated cardboard
• Moss Sheets
• Thread

Instructions:

1. Start from the bottom of your cone and working in a circle, glue on your pods.
2. Fill in any gaps with broken bits of pods.
3. Let dry.

1. To make the tree trunk, roll a piece of heavy corrugated cardboard into a circle and glue to secure.
2. Insert toothpicks into the cardboard trunk and press into the bottom of the cone.
3. Make sure your tree is balanced and make any adjustments to the trunk as needed.
4. Secure with more glue.
5. Cut a piece of sheet moss and glue around the cardboard.
6. Wrap thread around the moss to secure.

Add some holiday embellishments and enjoy your potpourri Christmas trees.

Etceteras: tissue paper trees

It seems I can’t get enough spring color lately. These little tissue paper trees would be perfect for a table center piece or place card holders.

A pretty in pink cherry blossom tree.

 A serene lavender wisteria tree.

A zesty yellow lemon tree.

The base for these trees is made with rolled up corrugated cardboard. You can purchase corrugated cardboard or reuse boxes. If you’re going to reuse a box, you need to peel away the top later of the cardboard to reveal the corrugated part.

The flowers are made with tissue paper. Simply cut a length of tissue paper and cut scallops along one edge. Then roll up the tissue paper and crimp the bottom.  Glue onto twigs or wire and insert into the rolled up cardboard base.
