Inkling: black & white new year’s party – party crackers

After the New Year’s ball has dropped and all the confetti tossed, send each guest home with a party favor wrapped up in a holiday cracker.  

Christmas crackers or poppers are used in many countries on Christmas. Typically, the cracker is filled with candy, small toys and notes. When the ends are pulled the cracker splits open with a small pop.

Crackers are easy to make with paper towel rolls, tissue paper, decorative paper and ribbon or string. I filled my crackers with mints. These aren’t true crackers since they don’t have the strip that makes them “pop” but they’re still a fun way to package up party favors.

Inkling: black & white new year’s party – new year’s ball

What New Year’s party would be complete without a New Years ball? To keep the black and white party theme going, I made a decorative New Year’s ball to hang over the table.

Here’s how you make a New Year’s ball.

• Start with a Styrofoam ball. I used a small 2-1/2 inch ball.
• Poke a hole through the center of the ball and insert a string or ribbon.
• Tie off the bottom of the string or glue it so that the string will not come out.
• Take a stack of basket coffee filters and use a felt tip pen or sharpie to color the edges.
• Let the ink bleed onto the edges a little.
• Crinkle the filters from the center and start hot gluing them onto the ball.

 

• I used a pin every now and then to make sure the filters would stay put.
• Use a lot of filters – the fuller the better.

 

  

Hang your New Year’s ball and wait for the countdown.

Inkling: black & white new year’s party – resolutions

Do you make New Year’s resolutions? I always think if you’re going to make a resolution or goal, it’s better to put it in writing.

To continue the black and white New Year’s Eve party theme, you can help your guests start off 2011 with a new list of goals. Work out more? Spend more time with family? Get healthy? Start a blog? Whatever your goal, New Year’s is traditionally the time to set them.

I made these 2011 goal lists in Word and simply printed them out and trimmed them. A small cigar band is made out of black cardstock so guests can roll up their lists and take them home.

Inkling: black & white new year’s party – confetti

The black and white party ideas continue from yesterday. A New Year’s Eve party wouldn’t be complete without confetti.

At midnight, besides a glass of champagne or sparkling cider, every guest should have a packet of confetti to ring in the new year.

You can buy little glassine bags or make your own. I made these little packets out of wax paper. Just cut a piece of wax or parchment paper and use a glue stick to close up the edges. Fill with confetti and staple closed.

Inkling: black & white new year’s party – fortune cookies

The Christmas rush is over. Presents are unwrapped, the tree is dropping needles and you have a to-do list a mile long. If however, you want to throw a New Year’s Eve party, you can quickly pull together a fun black and white theme.

These paper fortune cookies are easy to make and would add a fun twist to your party. All you need is paper, tape and a gel pen. You can find the how-to here.

I printed out a black and white image on plain white card stock. Using a circle cutter, I cut a 4 inch circle and folded the fortune cookies. I hand wrote fortunes on black paper with a gel pen and inserted them into the cookies.

Inkling: oh christmas tree, oh christmas tree

For my final Christmas project, I wanted to accomplish two things. One: make a Christmas tree and, two: use up some of my scraps of paper.

I have a box of paper scraps that would no longer close and it was definitely time to either toss some of it or find a way to use up some of the smaller pieces.

I started with another branch that I rescued from the yard clipping bin. I made a cone out of cardstock and hot glue gunned it onto the branch. Then, I cut strips of paper and started gluing and gluing and gluing.

My tree is a little crooked and uneven but I like it like this. It gives it a Charlie Brown Christmas Tree feel.

A tree can get much greener than this. The trunk made from yard clippings and branches made from scrap paper.

Inkling: it’s a wrap – take 4

For my final holiday gift wrap idea, I wanted the package to have snowflakes that looked like they were falling.

I used my snowflake rubber stamps and stamped the snowflakes onto blue cardstock using silver ink. I taped a piece of string to each snowflake and then taped each string to the package. A contrasting blue grosgrain ribbon covers the tape.

When you pick up the package, the snowflakes sway back and forth.
