Etceteras: emergency kit gift box

With all the bad weather we’ve had this winter, I thought it might be a good idea  to have some emergency supplies on hand. I found some emergency candles and match boxes at the dollar store.

I covered the match boxes in kraft paper and added vintage match book graphics.

 

I wrapped the candles in vintage-looking lace and tied them together with a piece of twine.

I think this would make a nice housewarming gift or party favor. For an extra special gift box or gift basket, you could add additional items, such as; batteries, a flashlight, water bottles, candy, mittens, a deck of cards or anything else that might come in handy if the power went out.

 

The supplies fit perfectly in a kraft box I had on hand. I finished up the kit by adding a label to the top of the box. (Vintage label courtesy of the Graphics Fairy).

Emergency supplies – check. Hopefully, we won’t need to use them.

Inkling: paper quilling

Have you heard of quilling? Quilling is an old art form that uses strips of paper that are rolled, shaped, and glued together to create designs. The paper is wound around a quill to create the roll – hence the name quilling.  

I have seen some amazing examples of quilling like this fish by Iron Maiden Art.

For my first attempt at quilling, I started with a simple design and one color. I didn’t have a quill handy (do you?)… so I used a toothpick to wind my paper around.

It’s actually not difficult but you need to be neat and precise (neither of which are my best qualities).

With a little practice, the designs can become more ornate and you could master quilling just like the Victorian ladies. Although, they probably had a little more time to practice.

Sew and Tell: vintage button display

 

I’ve been thinking about how to display some of my vintage buttons and decided to use embroidery hoops for frames. I grouped the buttons into color categories.

Brown buttons on grey flannel

White and cream buttons on beige feed sack cloth

Green buttons on white cotton

Each button is so unique and I love the detail on them.

Now my vintage buttons can be displayed and enjoyed instead of being tucked away.
