Etceteras: burlap bowl

This project started out as a doily bowl. You may have seen them around – beautiful bowls made from vintage doilies. Except, I wanted to make my doily bowl out of paper doilies. That project is in the “craft fail” bin.

The delicate paper doilies kept tearing and after a few tries, I gave up. I still wanted to make a bowl and moved on to a sturdier approach – and what could be sturdier than burlap? The photo directly above shows the actual color of the burlap – a sage green. The top photo shows the color when sunlight streams through it.

To make a burlap bowl, you’ll need the following:
  • Burlap
  • Bowl
  • Wax Paper
  • Glue
  • Embellishments

  • Cover the outside of your bowl with wax paper and tape down on the inside of the bowl to secure.
  • Cut a circle of burlap or other fabric to a desired size
  • In a separate container or jar, mix 2 parts water and 1 part glue.
  • Brush your glue mixture onto the burlap adhering it to the covered bowl. You can use clothes pins or binder clips to hold the fabric to the rim of the bowl while it’s drying.
  • To make the top edges of your bowl curl, remove your fabric from the bowl before it is completely stiff. Add more glue mixture to the edges and curl them outward.
  • Let your bowl completely dry and add floral embellishments.

This pretty fall burlap bowl is ready to be filled with nuts and leaves.

  1. I love this. I've used a stiffening product before with cheesecloth but haven't tried anything with burlap. Did you just use white glue?

  7. This is so wonderful! Do you think a spray adhesive or spray starch would work as well as a glue mixture?
