Celebrations: a gift from the heart

This Mother's Day, I'm working with Clever Girls in support of Macy's Heart of Haiti to shine a light on the "trade, not aid" program, which provides sustainable income to Haitian artisans struggling to rebuild their lives and support their families after the 2010 earthquake.

Mother’s Day is just around the corner and as always, I’m stumped on a Mother’s Day gift for my mom.

It’s not until you become a mother yourself that you fully understand what being a mother really is. The love, joy, frustration and a level of patience you didn’t know existed. There’s really no gift that can express the gratitude we have for our mothers.

I think a Mother’s Day gift should come from the heart. Whether it’s an extravagant gift or a simple homemade gift, it should honor a mother’s love and sacrifice.

I was thrilled to receive two matching hearts from Macy’s Heart of Haiti collection. I’ll give one to my mom and I’ll keep the other. Matching hearts that symbolize that we are both mothers and connected.

The hearts are beautiful and I’m really pleased to be able to tell you about Macy’s Heart of Haiti. Heart of Haiti is a “Trade, Not Aid” initiative launched by artist and social entrepreneur, Willa Shalit, The Clinton Bush Haiti Fund and Macy’s. Heart of Haiti has already led to employment of 750 artists in Haiti, providing financial benefits for an estimated 8,500 people in the country.

Each item is a one-of-a-kind design and handmade by a Haitian artisan from raw materials such as recycled oil drums, wrought iron, papier-mâché and stone. The collection features more than 40 home decor items including quilts, metalwork, ceramics, jewelry and paintings and is made almost entirely from recycled and sustainable items such as old cement bags, cardboard, oil drums and local gommier wood. Heart of Haiti products are available online at Macy’

I can’t think of a more fitting gift, than a gift from the heart and a gift that gives back.

Happy Mother’s Day Mom!
PS – sorry I cropped Dad out of the photo but this is your day!
