Celebrations: dyed & speckled easter eggs

What would Easter or spring décor be without some fun eggs? I try to do something different every year and this year I went back to basics with good old fashioned dyed eggs.




To make these eggs, you need to blow out the egg and keep the shell intact. You can use the method where you poke a hole on each end of the egg and blow the yolk out but let me tell you, it’s hard work. Rather than keel over, I poked a hole on each end and used a bamboo shish kabob stick to break up the yoke. Then I shook out the yoke, poked some more and shook some more. Once the egg had dripped out I cleaned them thoroughly in soapy water and let them drip dry.

After I had done all that, I saw these beautiful eggs over on Rook No. 17 where I also learned there is a tool to remove egg yolks. Definitely need to get one of those.


To color the eggs, I used a mixture of blue food coloring, vinegar and water. {1 teaspoon vinegar, 1/2 cup boiling water, desired amount of food coloring}.

The speckles were created using a gold metallic Sharpie. Did you know that Sharpies now come in metallics? So fun!

For Easter, I’ll display the eggs with these cute Beatrix Potter dishes and other sweet Easter knick knacks.


The dishes are all gifts my son received when he was a baby. We used to put them out with carrots for the Easter bunny.


I still love pulling out these dishes every spring even though the Easter bunny belief is long gone. But of course, he still wants an Easter basket.
