CELEBRATIONS: Vintage Button Heart

Vintage Button Heart via homework | carolynshomework.com

I had this idea to use up some of my vintage buttons and create a little heart on an embroidery hoop. I naively thought that I had come up with some sort of original idea to create a little heart. Ha – I checked Pinterest and I discovered there are entire boards dedicated to button hearts on embroidery hoops. There are even hearts using red thread which again I thought would be original. Oh well, I decided to go ahead and create the little project that I had visualized even if it’s been done many, many times.

Vintage Button Heart via homework | carolynshomework.comTo make a vintage button heart, all you’ll need is a good pile of buttons, thread, and embroidery hoop and fabric. The fabric on my embroidery hoop is wool flannel.

Vintage Button Heart via homework | carolynshomework.comStart by tracing or drawing your heart on the fabric. When you sew on the buttons, make sure to cover your lines. I stitched the buttons around the outline first and then started filling in the heart.

Vintage Button Heart via homework | carolynshomework.comI opted to pile on my buttons but you can lay them out flat also.

Vintage Button Heart via homework | carolynshomework.comI thought this project would take longer but was surprised at how quickly it came together.

Vintage Button Heart via homework | carolynshomework.comLove, love, love vintage buttons!

  11. This is so beautiful, Carolyn. I love vintage buttons as well ~ I have an old cookie tin filled with buttons that were my Grandmother's and my Mother's ~ I was just looking at them a few weeks ago. :) I wanted to thank you for sharing this at last week's Project Inspire{d} and let you know that this is one of my features for the upcoming party. I hope you are having a wonderful weekend.

    Hugs, Mary Beth

  13. Adorable idea. Although I've seen these before, I like the way you stacked the buttons to give great dimension. It's adorable. Thanks for your idea.
