The Chinese New Year is on January 31st and this year is the year of the horse. I thought it would be fun to make some paper fortune cookies to celebrate the event.
Back when I first started this blog in 2010, I made these black and white paper fortune cookies. It’s a quick and easy project and you can get creative with your own custom fortunes. 
You can use any type of paper to make fortune cookies except something really thick. I used an assortment of lighter weight scrapbook paper and very light weight origami paper. 
Start by cutting your paper into a circle. I used a circle cutter and made 3 inch circles.
Bring the edges together to form a semi-circle but don’t fold or crease the paper. With your index finger positioned in the middle, bring the remaining edges together to form the cookie shape. It’s hard to describe and I didn’t take pictures of the process since I needed both hands. Here’s a great tutorial with step by step photos and instructions. I followed her tutorial exactly except instead of tape to hold the cookie together, I used a dab of hot glue.
Once you have all your paper fortune cookies, have fun making the fortunes. They can be sincere or funny – whatever you want.
Most of the paper I used was leftover Christmas paper. The pink, red and black colors work well together for a Chinese New Year theme.
And, as I mentioned, this is the year of the horse. The animals repeat as shown on this wheel.
