Au Naturale: frosty apples

Here’s another item leftover from my fall décor. These beautiful Golden Delicious apples were part of my Thanksgiving tablescape. Of course, at the time, the were unadorned and hanging out with white pumpkins and acorns.

As I was cleaning up and transitioning to holiday décor, I thought I could still use these apples. It was a toss up between making a pie or using them in a crafty way. The paint brush won out over the rolling pin.

To make frosty apples all you need to do is cover them in glue or Mod Podge with a foam brush. It’s messy work so have everything ready before you start coating. I used Epsom salts to create a frosty look. Use a paper plate or bowl and fill it with the salts. Once your apple is coated with Mod Podge roll the apple around in the salts.

Carefully lift it out and set is aside to dry.

Add other embellishments like a ribbon bow and hanging bling. These little gold tags are from the Inspiration Francaise line from Jolee’s Boutique {EK Success Brands}.

I’m not sure how long these apples will last since they were from my fall décor. If you want to use these closer to the holidays or on your holiday table, you may want to wait until closer to your event to create these. Shriveled frosty apples might not have the same effect as fresh Golden Delicious frosty apples.

  1. The frosted apples look very "christmasy." They have lasted a long, long time. I was looking at an episode on HGTV about decorating the White House and there are several rooms decorated with huge beautiful displays of garlands, swags, wreaths, trees and decor all made out of fresh fruits. My thoughts are how all of this could stand up to the various indoor temperatures for such a long period. Do you think the fruit is sprayed to help keep them from decaying?

  19. Beautiful idea! I guess you could do this with fake fruit as well, and then you won't have the worry of rotting fruit! I am inspired to try this!
