Sew & Tell: Vintage Covered Buttons

Button 3I made some covered buttons and some combination covered buttons. They aren’t truly vintage because I made them but the metal button caps and backs are The Original Prims Cover Your Own Buttons.

Button 1The larger covered buttons are fairly easy to create but the smaller combination buttons were a bit challenging for me.
Button 7The button kits were given to me from a friend. They were her mom’s and my guess is they are from around the 1950’s.
Button 8To make the combination buttons you first cover the smaller ball with a small circle of fabric and tuck the edges into the open end. Then you slip the ball with a second piece of fabric through the larger cap, smooth out the fabric and tuck it tightly into the teeth. Finish by snapping on the back plate. Sounds easy enough but working with those tiny pieces of fabric, trying to keep the ball in place and tucking in the fabric was harder than I thought.
Button 2I also used scraps of vintage fabric to create the buttons. The fabric scraps are from linens, aprons and other cutter pieces.
Button 6And what better way to display this button sampler than on an embroidery hoop.
Button 5I love the button with the charming lady on it. I wish I had more of this fabric but it was a tiny piece of fabric from a piece of a quilt.
Button 10I love this little sampler. Doesn’t it look pretty on my Grandmother’s hand crocheted doily?

Thanks for visiting.
