Etceteras: perk up a dollar store trivet

Trivet 5I picked up a plain wooden trivet at the dollar store recently and once again, I’m saying to myself “why didn’t I get more?”. They’re like blank canvases. You could paint them in bright colors, paint the slats with an ombre effect or paint and stencil them like I did.

Here’s how I painted and stenciled this easy trivet.

Trivet CollageThe dollar store trivet was plain wood as you can see in the above top photo. I wanted my wood darker and didn’t have any dark stain so I used Martha Steward craft paint in Vanilla Bean. I painted on a very thin coat so the wood grain would still show through.

Once the dark paint was dry, I created the feathers using a Martha Stewart adhesive silkscreen called Peacock Feathers.

Using a silkscreen on the slats was a little challenging because the surface wasn’t completely flat. With silkscreens, you need to push the paint through the tiny screens and you can see in this close up the detail isn’t quite what it should be.

Once the feathers were dry, I finished with a spray gloss finish to seal the paint.

All ready to serve up something yummy.

Thanks so much for stopping by.
