Celebrations: mother’s day gift box

Mother’s Day is around the corner and a homemade gift is always special. This year I’m going to make some treats and fill up this embellished box that I made.

To make a pretty treat box like this, you just need a few simple supplies that you probably have on around the house. This box was an oatmeal canister – good ole Quaker Oats. I first covered the lid in crepe paper flowers and leaves.

Mother's Day Gift Box (12)The flowers that I made resemble Ranunculus. Here are the steps to make these flowers:
  1. I used crepe paper streamers that I usually pick up at the dollar store in the party aisle. To make the petals, cut out 6-8 pieces of crepe paper and cut the top in a semi circle.
  2. Pinch the bottom closed.
  3. Glue your petals together to form the flower.
  4. To make the pistil, use a small piece of black crepe paper folded several times. Cut into strips but don’t cut all the way to the bottom.
  5. Pinch the bottom closed and glue into the middle of your flower.
  6. The leaves were also made out of crepe paper but since I didn’t have green, I painted them. I mixed a dot of green craft paint with about a tablespoon of water. Dip the leaf quickly into the green water and set aside to dry.
Blog Mothers Day Blog HopOnce you have all your flowers and leaves completed glue them onto the lid of your box.

Set you lid aside to dry and start working on the box.

You can cover the box {or canister} with paper or fabric. I chose a vintage tea towel that actually belonged to my mother so it will be an extra special gift for her.

The tea towel that I chose was very fine and I didn’t want glue or Mod Podge to show through so I used a multi-purpose glue stick to adhere the fabric to the canister. I worked really well and you can’t see any glue through the fine fabric.

Once you’re done you can fill the gift box with treats or a purchased gift.
