UPCYCLING: Shopping bag to teen decor

Shopping Bag to Teen Sign via homework (9)CMy son has reached the age where he likes to pick out his own clothes. Long gone are the days of cute matching clothes that I would pick out. He typically likes the beachy surf and skate shop type clothing stores that are everywhere here in Southern California.

Blog Cali Sign
And being a typical teenager he left this shopping bag on the floor in my office/craft room. I stared at it for days because I really like the California flag graphic.

Shopping Bag to Teen Sign via homework (1)Inspiration finally struck and I decided to make a teen wall sign for his room. I had an old piece of wood outside that was perfect. OK , I confess, I have several pieces of wood because craft hoarders tend to save things like that.

Shopping Bag to Teen Sign via homeworkI cut out the pieces of the graphic that I wanted to use. Max just wanted “CALI” to show so I used pieces of the red flag border, the bear paw, the bear head and the words “golden state of mind. When I was happy with the positioning, I used a thick coat of Mod Podge Matte on the board to adhere the pieces. Once it was dry, I sealed the board with two more coats of Mod Podge. To hang the sign I used the handle that came on the original bag and stapled it to the back of the sign.
Shopping Bag to Teen Sign via homework (11)Max loves it. He says he’ll take it with him to college. College... I can hardly believe that college is just around the corner. It seems like just the other day I was buying him matchy-matchy cute clothes and stepping on toys.

Shopping Bag to Teen Sign via homework (9)I hope he keeps this little sign forever. Maybe he’ll even take it with him when he has his own house, store it away somewhere and remember that I made it for him.

Thanks for visiting.

  9. Isn't it wonderful when our children appreciate what we make for them? Love the sign, and I'm thinking of doing something similar with my daughters' collection of shopping bags.
